Beethoven conceived of the plan for his final three piano sonatas (Op. 109, 110 and 111) during the summer of 1820, while he worked on his Missa solemnis. Although the work was only seriously outlined by 1819, the famous first theme of the allegro ed appassionato was found in a draft book dating from 1801 to 1802, contemporary to his Second Symphony . I was not going to write a review, of Beethoven piano sonatas, there seemed opinion enough by various writers, but I have recently re-calibrated my stereo system and went back to these for a listen, especially my favourite sonatas Op. 110 and 111 of which I have versions of Gilels, Kempff, Kovacevich, Kuerti, Lortie, and Pollini.

As a huge Gilels and Beethoven fan I had to get this. As with most others I am very saddened that the complete set wasn't recorded. Especially Op.111 Listening to this set opens up a whole new world of Beethoven. The rich warm sound of Gilels is an absolute joy to listen to and it has made me rediscover beautiful sections in many sonatas.

There is some irony in the fact that the single autograph reproduction in the booklet accompanying DG’s re-release of Gilels’s Beethoven recordings comes from Op. 111, since this was one of the few sonatas Gilels had still to record at the time of his sudden death in 1985. Surely two of the very greatest pianists of the 20th century.

The timing of Beethoven's early publications was shrewdly calculated. Beethoven performed some of these works often enough for them to become familiar, and people encouraged him to publish them (the Trios, Op. 1, are an example). That his publications would be a success was almost a given, especially since the early ones involved the instrument on which he was an acknowledged virtuoso, the piano.
